Director, the Center for Law and Justice of the Zionist Organization of America in New York City
Despite the reassurances of Martha Mecartney, chair of the UCI Academic Senate [“UCI safe for Jewish students,” The Orange Grove, May 10], anti-Semitism at UCI has caused Jewish students to feel intimidated and fear for their safety.
They’ve been subjected to signs on campus depicting the Star of David dripping with blood, or equating it with the swastika. Student articles and events have equated Israeli leaders with Nazis. One article suggested that Jews were genetically different and separate from everyone else.
Signs have attributed false statements to Jewish and Israeli leaders. A Holocaust Memorial was destroyed, and swastikas have defaced campus property. Speakers blame “Zionist Jews” for controlling the media and the U.S. government and threaten that “your days are numbered.”….
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights decided that an investigation, which is ongoing, was warranted. The problem is so serious that the Hillel Foundation of Orange County has created a task force to address it.
