Congress task force against anti-Semitism condemns Auschwitz sign theft

Dec. 18, 2009

US Congressman Ron Klein (D-FL) and Mike Pence (R-IN), the Co-Chairs of the Congressional Task Force Against Anti-Semitism, released a statement on Friday condemning the theft of the ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ sign at the entrance to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland.

“We were disgusted to learn of the theft of one of the most infamous and poignant symbols of the Holocaust. Auschwitz is sacred ground, the site where hundreds of thousands of innocents were murdered in cold blood,” the statement read. “To deface this historic site is to insult the memory of all who suffered there.”

Klein and Pence went on to call on Polish authorities “to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of this terrible crime to the fullest extent of the law.”
