UC Irvine: What’s up?

(The  Orange County Independent Task force on anti-Semitism received a copy, this morning,  of the following letter from the organization,  Act! for America:)

Chancellor Michael Drake

University of California, Irvine

Dear Chancellor Drake,

On behalf of ACT! for America, a nationwide issues advocacy organization with over 130,000 members and 425 local chapters, I urge the University of California at Irvine (UCI) to implement its own disciplinary recommendations against the Muslim Student Union (MSU).  It is my understanding you were present the evening the MSU carried out repeated disruptions of the Israeli Ambassador’s address.   Several hundred more witnessed the obviously orchestrated interruptions and tens of thousands more saw it later on the Internet.  The Muslim students continued to chant “Down with Israel” just outside the building after they all left the lecture hall together in another obviously planned disruption.   The MSU and their defenders continue to assert this was all spontaneous. An interview with Prof. Wistrich at Hebrew U.
Times are dire, anti-Semitism is on the rise and the world is becoming a more perilous place for the Jews to live in by the day, if you ask Prof. Robert S. Wistrich, the head of the Hebrew University’s Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Anti-Semitism and the author of a recently published book on the subject called A Lethal Obsession: Anti-Semitism – From Antiquity to the Global Jihad.

The evidence to support his claim is all around us, he said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post on Monday. Continue reading

Anti-Semitic cartoons depict an alternative version of events.

An Iranian website calling the Holocaust “the great lie” and depicting an alternative version of events in Jewish history in cartoon form has been launched.

The site is reportedly financed by a cultural foundation, is not government affiliated, and is based mainly on a book of cartoons first published in 2008.

More Speech?

NOTE:  According to the the editor of Orange County Jewish Life Magazine, the following interview was granted by President Yudof provided that a letter to him from 12 Jewish organizations was not discussed.  If this is in fact the case, it is most unfortunate since according to the interview Yudof said ”  “We need more speech, not less,”  he also said that community leaders should ” ..hold our feet to the fire.”

The letter signed by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, the Orthodox Union, The Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Orange County Independent Task Force on anti-Semitism and eight other organizations, expressed concern that the newly formed Advisory council on campus climate and inclusion would not adequately address the specific issues of anti-Semitism and safety of Jewish students on U C Campuses.  In his response letter to the 12 organizations, Yudof characterized their letter as ” a dishearteningly ill-informed rush to judgment. ”

In a subsequent letter to Yudof, the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) expressed concern that the U. C. advisory council members  “lacked expertise” in confronting and combating anti-Semitism.  ZOA’s  letter also suggests that at least two members are “the wrong choice” due to their alleged anti-Israel biases.–OCITF

More Speech, Not Less

by Ilene Schneider

“We have the greatest public university system in the world, and six universities from the UC system are considered the greatest research universities in the world,” said Mark Yudof, who was named the 19th president of the University of California in 2008.  “It’s our job to preserve, protect, and defend UC.” Continue reading
